What to Update When a Safety Standard Is Revised
A revision affects the whole conformity chain, not just the reference number in a document.

When a standard is revised, many organisations update only the reference number in their technical file. The revision affects a set of documents that support conformity, and they are best updated as a group. Working from a checklist keeps the review traceable when an auditor or a customer asks how the change was handled.
Map the impact first
List every document that cites the previous edition: instructions for use, nameplates and warning markings, technical agreements, risk assessment records, test and inspection reports, supplier declarations. Once the list is complete, decide which items need revision and which only need the version change recorded. Assign an owner and a date to each item so that the update does not stall halfway.
Instructions and markings are easily missed
The sections of an instruction manual covering installation, use, maintenance and residual risk often correspond directly to clauses in the standard. If wording changes in the revision, the corresponding chapters should be reviewed, including translated versions and documents shipped with the machine.
Keep risk assessment and training records
Risk assessments, verification records and training records are the process evidence for conformity. When reassessing after a revision, keep the basis, the participants and the conclusions, and record how differences from the previous edition were handled. Where a clause has been reworded rather than changed in substance, note that judgement explicitly.
Avoid mixing editions
Register the standard edition and its effective date in document control, and define how the transition period is handled. Where a requirement is unclear, the official information from the issuing body and the competent authority takes precedence.
This article lists the documents normally affected by a revision. It does not replace a conformity determination.
